Repair or Replace a Window? A Practical Inspection Checklist
October 24, 2026 · Star Windows
A window has several parts: glass, seals, sash, frame and operating hardware. A problem in one part does not always require replacing the whole assembly. Start by describing what changed and where you see it. Star Windows can discuss repair and replacement options after assessing the condition and suitability of the existing window.
Where is the moisture?
Condensation on an accessible interior surface has different causes from persistent fogging between panes. Note whether the moisture wipes away, when it appears, and whether there are stains, soft trim or water marks around the opening. Avoid assuming that every condensation problem is a failed glass unit; room humidity, surface temperatures and air movement can all matter.
Does the sash open, close and lock?
Record which movement causes trouble. A sticking lock, damaged balance, worn roller or distorted frame can produce different symptoms. Do not force a sash that feels unsafe. A clear photo of the handle, hinges or manufacturer label can help identify the component, although part availability and repair feasibility need confirmation.
Where does the draft come from?
Describe whether air seems to move at the sash joint, around the trim or through damaged weatherstripping. The assessment may need to distinguish a window component problem from the connection between the frame and the wall. Water intrusion or deteriorated framing deserves closer inspection before cosmetic sealing is proposed.
When replacement may make more sense
Consider replacement when the assembly is damaged, the product no longer suits the opening, required parts are unavailable, or repeated repairs would leave important problems unresolved. Compare a repair scope with a replacement scope, including finish work, disposal and warranty terms. Choose the option that addresses the cause rather than only the visible symptom.
Photos that make your enquiry useful
- A full interior and exterior view, taken safely from an accessible location.
- A close-up of the problem and any product label.
- The approximate age, number of affected windows and your ZIP code.
- A note about fogging, drafts, leaks, operation and when the problem started.
Request an assessment and describe the symptoms. We will discuss whether glass, hardware, sealing or a complete replacement is appropriate after reviewing the project.
