Window and door pricing: what your quote includes
There is no single installed price for a window or door style. A useful quote connects the selected product to the actual opening, access and finishing work. Star Windows confirms project pricing after the scope is understood; request a measured quote for your home.
The components of a complete quote
| Component | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Product and configuration | Number of units, measured sizes, frame or door material, glass package, opening style, finish, grids and hardware. Ask for the model and specifications used in the quote. |
| Removal and opening | Insert or full-frame replacement; removal of old units; condition of the sill, framing and surrounding wall. Ask how hidden damage would be documented and approved. |
| Installation and water management | Support, fastening, flashing, insulation, seals and drainage appropriate to the assembly and wall. An opening enlarged or changed structurally has a different scope. |
| Finishing and disposal | Interior casing, exterior trim or cladding, paint or stain responsibilities, cleanup and removal of old material. Confirm what will be left ready to use and what is excluded. |
| Access and site work | Upper-floor access, large-glass handling, landscaping protection, egress excavation or well work, and garage track or opener coordination where relevant. |
| Permits and schedule | Who checks local requirements, obtains any necessary approvals and arranges inspection. Product ordering, preparation and installation dates should be confirmed for the actual project. |
Send enough detail for a useful first conversation
- Your town and contact details; the rooms or entrances involved.
- Photos from inside and outside, including the whole opening and nearby trim.
- Approximate width, height and number of units. Do not use these as ordering dimensions.
- Your priorities: drafts, leaks, difficult operation, daylight, privacy or a changed opening.
- Preferred style and finish, plus any access or scheduling constraints.
Compare the scope before comparing the total
Two quotes can look very different because they include different work. Request a written, itemized scope and check these points side by side.
- Are the product model, glass and hardware equivalent?
- Is the existing frame retained or removed?
- Are trim, disposal and site restoration included?
- How are concealed damage and changes approved?
- Which product and installation warranty terms apply, and who handles a claim?
- What are the payment stages, order conditions and confirmed project dates?
Common pricing questions
Can photos give a final price?
Photos help establish the likely scope. Final sizing, opening condition and installation details normally need a site survey before an order and final written quote.
Does a larger order always cost less per unit?
Quantity can change mobilization and ordering, but unit sizes, access and opening repairs still differ. Ask for a project-specific breakdown rather than assuming a volume discount.
Is repair worth considering before replacement?
An isolated hardware, screen or glass issue may have a repair option. Send photos and describe the fault so the condition of the frame and the practical options can be assessed.
Are energy savings included in the price?
No saving amount is promised here. Compare tested ratings for the selected product and consider installation, existing conditions and household use when discussing performance.
