Egress Window Requirements in Illinois: A Homeowner's Guide
June 25, 2026 · Star Windows
If you're turning a basement into a livable space - especially a bedroom - Illinois building code requires an egress window: an escape route in an emergency. Here's what inspectors look for.
The core requirements
- Minimum opening: at least 5.7 sq ft of clear openable area (5.0 sq ft at grade-floor level in some cases).
- Minimum height: 24 inches clear opening height.
- Minimum width: 20 inches clear opening width.
- Sill height: no more than 44 inches above the finished floor.
- Window well: below-grade windows need a well large enough to climb out, with a ladder if it's deep.
Local amendments vary by village and county, so the exact figures should always be confirmed with your municipality before work begins.
Why use a pro
Egress involves cutting the foundation, waterproofing, and a properly drained window well - get any of it wrong and you risk leaks or a failed inspection. We handle the cut, the window, the well and the code compliance end to end.
